Why Sustainability Matters

A robust sustainability program makes our properties more efficient, reduces risk and positively impacts the communities we serve. We have adopted a number of time-bound goals to keep us on track for realizing our big-picture commitment to ESG, and we intend to expand these objectives following the completion of our formal materiality assessment next year.

  • Benchmark ShopCore portfolio using WELL Health-Safety Rating by 2021
  • Incorporate DEI into all company trainings
  • Launch our supplier diversity program
  • Contribute to CoreGiving’s goal of reaching 7.5 million meals served in 2021
  • Complete a formal materiality assessment in 2022
  • Respond to CDP annually

Tenant Sustainability Programs

ShopCore aims to be a leader in sustainability and we look to be a partner with our tenants to mutually achieve our sustainability goals. We recognize each property is unique and will have its own set of solutions to advance sustainability and we encourage creativity to do so. Our solutions include, but are not limited to:

  • Benchmarking and tracking energy consumption in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager
  • Green leasing practices
  • Reducing energy, water, and waste
  • Identifying and implementing energy efficiency projects
  • Educating team members and vendors on our sustainability practices
  • Incorporating sustainability into all business decisions
  • Reducing water consumption through the installation of low flow fixtures, native landscaping, smart irrigation, and efficient irrigation systems
  • Following sustainable construction guidelines for redevelopment projects
  • Implementing recycling and waste education programs
  • Formalizing and practicing green cleaning and pest control standards
  • Using no VOC paint for interior surfaces
  • Transitioning to paperless processes on-site
  • Installing Electric Vehicle charging stations

Social Responsibility

WE ARE
RISING
TO THE
CHALLENGE

Health & Wellness

There is a direct connection between our environmental sustainability efforts and human health, and we are working to make sure our buildings are designed in a way that puts people — and their health — at the center. We also know that we accomplish more through collaboration, which is why we’ve joined forces with a number of partners, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Safari Energy, and Carbon Lighthouse, to advance our goals.

With sustainability ingrained in how we do business, we are committed to measuring, tracking, and reporting on our environmental footprint, from carbon emissions and energy usage to waste generation and water consumption. We believe our proactive approach will help us reduce our footprint, enhance our financial health and preserve the environment for future generations.

Our People

Our people are our most valuable asset at ShopCore, and we are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive culture where everyone feels valued, included, and empowered to be themselves.

Our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee cultivates a professional environment that is diverse, equitable, inclusive, and supportive. SEED is our female-focused program focused on fostering both personal and professional growth for women at ShopCore. We strive to support, empower, engage and develop our female employees at all levels.

Specifically, our next steps include communicating a clear process for resolving workplace issues, training our employees on unconscious bias, and promoting under-represented leaders to the director level and above.

Our Communities

Giving back has been part of who we are from the very beginning. As part of our commitment to strengthening the communities our shopping centers serve, we have partnered with our fellow portfolio companies in support of CoreGiving, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to ending childhood hunger in the United States. CoreGiving works with corporate sponsors and donates 100% of funding to food banks across the nation in communities where we live and operate.

The profound effects of climate change and COVID-19 on communities and families across the country have also surfaced many intersectional social justice issues. We believe companies play an essential role in tackling these challenges by taking action to shape a more equitable and just society.

Governance
